Great way to start the new year...

I know I am being sarcastic when I say this, but if I am not sarcastic, I guess I would be emo.

After touchdown in Perth the day before, I started developing 'super sexy voice'. Initially I didn't think much of it, perhaps I need to drink lotsa water and all that. But the second day proved to be too much for me, I began to grow slightly feverish. And to top it all, blocked nose and coughing began to plagued me. I even tweeted a really disgusting pic of how I destroyed the environment by consuming soo much tissue paper. I won't even bother to post the pic now, cause I am being repentant now that I am sober.

My hubby and his parents asked me to consult a doctor, but with my 'awesome' experience with the docs here, I was 100% reluctant. Plus I knew that it wasn't a major illness, nothing some herbal medication and rest won't cure. The flu I have developed is considered to be due to inner heatiness (for those who understand chinese terms, that term won't sound so weird). It wasn't surprising as I have suffered from major body heatiness while I was in Msia.

So, what causes inner body heatiness? (for want of a better term... it is hard translating, no?)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Consumption of heaty food such as DURIAN (my guilty pleasure), rambutan, fried food, and spicy food (In my opinion, almost 100% of the food served in Msia seems heaty)
  • Constipation
  • Hormonal change
and etc. But for me, this time was mainly lack of sleep and consumption of heaty food. The week before, while still in Msia... I developed these disgusting ulcers inside my mouth. In total, there were 3 ulcers, 2 grew at the side of the mouth which is alright and one at the gum which hurts!! The pain radiates to my right lymph node and sometimes to the base of my ear. So I did what I can do and consumed food that quenches the fire within. (Again... it is hard translating...).

Some example of these food are like bitter gourd juice (can be found even in roadside hawker stalls, which sells blended juice that is), wong loh kat (can be found in many shops that sells herbal medicine and drinks, only $1.50 per bowl. For maximum 'omph', ask them to add the powder to relief heat. Warning, super bitter! It cost about $4 for the added powder. Don't bother to buy the canned Wong Loh kat drink, it tastes like the grass jelly drink without the grass jelly), and tang gui (this jelly is black in colour and tastes bitter as well, so add a bit of honey and/or syrup on it and it should be fine).

If you are not a fan of bitter stuff and just not as desperate as me, you can choose the alternative of barley drink (of course, the ones that are sold in coffee shops have lotsa sugar, so choose to cook it yourself and use the rock sugar instead of white sugar), green bean soup/stew, the cooling water (I forgot the name but the logo is three leg and a rhino at the front. It tastes like water and a little something, I am not sure) and the loh han guo drink.

Especially when I don't have enough sleep, I cook soup which helps nourishes my inner self and reduces the heat. One example is of course barley drink, the other is a soup which uses pork soft bones, ginseng roots (the endings are cooling while the main stem are heaty, so I am referring to the endings), white radish (great for absorbing toxins in the body, do not take when taking medication as it may reduce the efficacy of the medicine), goji, red dates, garlic, salt and pepper. Wa-la, yummy yet beneficial soup~!

If you have some suggestions on how to reduce the body heat, feel free to drop a comment or two. Till then, I think I need more rest.

XOXO
